Chocochip Gooey Treats Recipe

Introduction

Chocochip Gooey Treats are a delightful dessert combining a soft cake crust with a rich, creamy chocolate chip filling. They’re perfect for sharing at gatherings or as a sweet treat any day of the week.

A square piece of pastry with three visible layers sits on a white plate with a thin blue rim. The bottom layer is a golden brown crust that looks hard and crumbly. The middle layer is dark brown, dense, and slightly moist, resembling a chocolate or fruit filling. The top layer is a shiny, golden, flaky crust with small cracks and uneven texture. A silver fork rests on the right side of the plate, slightly overlapping the pastry. The plate is placed on a white marbled surface. Photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 stick salted butter, melted (8 tablespoons)
  • 1 package cream cheese (8 ounces), room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 box powdered sugar (16 ounces)
  • 1 stick salted butter, melted (8 tablespoons)
  • 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 ounces)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F and position the oven rack in the center.
  2. Step 2: Lightly butter or spray a 9″x13″ casserole dish or baking pan.
  3. Step 3: In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, 1 egg, and melted butter. Mix well until the batter reaches the consistency of loose Play-Doh. Using an electric hand mixer is easiest.
  4. Step 4: Scrape the batter into the prepared pan, using a scraper to get all the batter from the bowl and beaters.
  5. Step 5: Set the beaters aside in the bowl for later use.
  6. Step 6: Using clean hands, press the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan and set aside.
  7. Step 7: In the same mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy.
  8. Step 8: Add 2 eggs and vanilla extract to the cream cheese and beat until very well combined.
  9. Step 9: With the mixer on low to medium-low speed, gradually add powdered sugar until fully combined.
  10. Step 10: Slowly mix in the melted butter until well incorporated.
  11. Step 11: Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed in the filling.
  12. Step 12: Pour the filling over the crust batter and spread it evenly.
  13. Step 13: Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The center will still be jiggly when done.
  14. Step 14: Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 2 hours before cutting into squares.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra gooeyness, don’t overbake; the center should remain slightly soft.
  • Substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with dark or milk chocolate chips for a different flavor profile.
  • Chill the filling cream cheese beforehand for easier mixing.
  • Add a handful of chopped nuts to the filling for added texture.

Storage

Store leftover treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Let them come to room temperature or warm briefly before serving for best gooey texture.

FAQs

Can I use a different cake mix flavor?

Yes, though yellow cake mix works best to balance the sweet and creamy filling. Chocolate or spice mixes may alter the final flavor.

Do I have to use cream cheese at room temperature?

It’s recommended to use room temperature cream cheese to ensure a smooth, lump-free filling. Cold cream cheese can be difficult to blend evenly.

  • Keep an eye on baking time as ovens differ; the filling should be slightly jiggly when done.
  • Allow sufficient cooling time to prevent the bars from falling apart when cut.
  • For extra gooey texture, slightly underbake by a few minutes if desired.
