Chocolate Coating
- Light Cocoa candy melts (milk chocolate morsels or chocolate-flavored almond bark) – 1 cup
- White candy melts (white chocolate morsels or vanilla almond bark) – 1 cup
- Pink candy melts – 1 cup
- Red candy melts – 1 cup
- Vegetable shortening or coconut oil (optional, for thinning) – up to 2 teaspoons
Decorations
- Valentine’s Day Sprinkle Set – as needed
- Heart sprinkles – as needed
- Pretzel rods – 12 rods
- Prepare the candy melts: Melt each type of candy coating separately according to the package instructions. Take care not to overheat to avoid thickening. If needed, add up to 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to thin the coating. Avoid adding any water or other liquids to prevent the candy from seizing.
- Coat the pretzels: Dip or pour the melted candy coating over about two-thirds of each pretzel rod. Gently shake off the excess coating to prevent drips. Immediately apply sprinkles by rotating the pretzel rods to cover all sides evenly. For larger sprinkles, place them individually to ensure good adhesion.
- Set the coated pretzels: Arrange the coated pretzels on waxed paper or a cooling rack. Using waxed paper will make removal easier once the coating sets.
- Drizzle additional colors: After the initial candy coating has fully set, use a spoon or fork to drizzle different colored candy melts over the pretzels for decorative effect. Before the drizzle fully hardens, carefully transfer the pretzels to clean waxed paper to avoid messes.
- Let dry completely: Allow all pretzels to dry fully at room temperature before packaging or serving to ensure the candy coating is firm and set.
Notes
- Do not add water or liquids other than vegetable shortening or coconut oil to candy melts to avoid seizing.
- Waxed paper is preferred over parchment paper for easy release after setting.
- Apply sprinkles immediately after dipping to ensure they adhere well.
- Larger sprinkles work best when placed by hand for precise decoration.
- Store finished pretzels in a cool, dry place to prevent melting or stickiness.
