Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Garlic Herb Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the meatballs.
  2. Prepare Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, dried parsley, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  3. Shape and Bake Meatballs: Shape the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them evenly spaced on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until fully cooked through.
  4. Cook Potatoes: While the meatballs are baking, place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large saucepan filled with water. Boil until tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Make Mashed Potatoes: Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Add minced garlic, butter, and milk. Mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. Stir in fresh chopped parsley, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Prepare Gravy: In a frying pan over medium heat, cook the flour for about one minute to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth to avoid lumps. Stir in soy sauce and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper, then simmer the gravy until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  7. Combine Meatballs and Gravy: Once meatballs are cooked, transfer them into the gravy, coating them well to soak up the flavors.
  8. Serve: Plate the Salisbury steak meatballs alongside a generous portion of the garlic herb mashed potatoes. Garnish with extra parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can sauté the onions before adding them to the meatball mixture.
  • Use fresh herbs if available for a more vibrant taste.
  • Ground beef with a higher fat content (80/20) works best for juicy meatballs.
  • The gravy can be made ahead and reheated before serving.
  • Adjust garlic quantity in mashed potatoes based on your preference.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free alternatives.
