Philly Cheesesteak Bowls are a delicious, low-carb twist on the classic sandwich featuring tender flank steak cooked with sautéed peppers, onions, and garlic, seasoned with a blend of spices, and topped with melted provolone cheese. This skillet dish is quick to prepare and perfect for a comforting meal without the bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1.52 lbs flank steak (sirloin steak or ground beef can also be used)
  • ½ yellow onion, diced
  • 2 bell peppers, chopped (any color)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.5 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 46 slices provolone cheese

Seasonings for Philly Cheesesteak

  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp dried marjoram
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp Montreal steak seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced peppers and onions to the skillet, allowing them to sweat and cook down until tender, about 5 minutes. Then, add minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute to release its aroma.
  2. Mix Seasonings: In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, dried oregano, dried marjoram, and optional Montreal steak seasoning. Stir to mix evenly.
  3. Cook the Steak: Add the chopped flank steak to the skillet with the cooked vegetables. Sprinkle the seasoning blend over the steak and vegetables and pour in Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and cook the steak for a few minutes until browned and cooked to your preferred doneness.
  4. Melt the Cheese: When the steak is nearly cooked, arrange the slices of provolone cheese on top of the steak and vegetable mixture. Remove the skillet from heat and cover it with a lid to allow the cheese to melt thoroughly over the hot mixture.

Notes

  • Flank steak is recommended for its tenderness and flavor, but sirloin or ground beef can be substituted depending on preference.
  • Feel free to customize the bell pepper colors for visual appeal and sweetness variation.
  • If you want a spicier kick, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning mix.
  • This dish pairs well with a side of cauliflower rice or a fresh green salad for a low-carb meal.
  • To melt cheese faster, you can briefly place the covered skillet back on low heat, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
