Oven-Baked Cabbage Burgers are a delicious and healthier twist on traditional burgers, where thick cabbage slices act as the base topped with flavorful seasoned ground beef, baked to perfection and topped with melted cheese. This recipe is perfect for those looking for a low-carb, juicy, and savory meal that is easy to prepare and bake in the oven.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cabbage Base

  • 1 small head of cabbage (cut into thick slices, about ½-inch thick)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Burger Mixture

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding)

Topping

  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the cabbage: Slice the cabbage into thick rounds about ½-inch thick. Brush both sides of each slice with olive oil, then arrange them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Make the burger mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef or turkey, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and the egg if you’re using it. Mix thoroughly to distribute all the ingredients evenly.
  4. Assemble the burgers: Take a generous handful of the meat mixture and press it firmly onto each cabbage slice, shaping the meat into a patty that covers the cabbage base evenly.
  5. Bake the burgers: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 25 minutes until the meat is mostly cooked through.
  6. Add cheese and broil: Remove the sheet from the oven and sprinkle shredded cheese over each burger. Switch the oven to broil and broil for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese has melted and is slightly golden and bubbly.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve warm with your favorite sides like sour cream, mustard, or dipping sauces. Enjoy your healthy and flavorful cabbage burgers!

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • The egg is optional but helps bind the burger mixture for easier shaping.
  • Try different cheeses like mozzarella or pepper jack for varied flavors.
  • For a spicier kick, add chopped jalapeños or chili flakes to the meat mixture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
