Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Vegetables

  • 1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced beef steak (such as sirloin or round)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 pounds baby potatoes, halved (or small potatoes cut into 1-inch chunks)

Seasoning and Oil

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons steak seasoning (or your favorite all-purpose seasoning blend)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste (optional, depending on your seasoning blend)
  • Nonstick cooking spray (for foil, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup. Tear off 4 large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil, about 12×18 inches each. Lightly spray the center of each sheet with nonstick cooking spray if desired to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the vegetables and beef: Thinly slice the onions and halve the baby potatoes or cut larger potatoes into 1-inch chunks. Pat the beef dry with paper towels and slice into strips if they aren’t already thinly sliced.
  3. Season the vegetables: In a large bowl, toss the potatoes and onions with olive oil, steak seasoning, and a pinch of salt and black pepper if needed. This ensures the seasoning coats everything evenly for balanced flavor.
  4. Assemble the foil packets: Divide the seasoned onion-and-potato mixture evenly among the four foil sheets, placing each pile in the center. Top each pile with an equal portion of sliced beef, spreading it out for even cooking.
  5. Seal the packets: Fold the long sides of the foil up and together over the filling, then tightly fold down the edges. Roll up the short ends to form snug packets, leaving a little room inside to allow steam circulation for cooking.
  6. Bake the packets: Place the foil packets on the prepared baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30–35 minutes. Check doneness by piercing a potato with a fork; the beef should be cooked through. For less well-done beef, open the packets in the last 5 minutes to let steam escape and slightly reduce cooking time.
  7. Check and finish baking if needed: Carefully open one packet, being cautious of hot steam, and test a potato for tenderness. If more cooking is needed, reseal and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes.
  8. Rest and serve: Remove from the oven and let packets rest unopened for 3–5 minutes to allow flavors to settle. Serve the foil packets directly on plates or transfer the contents to shallow bowls, spooning any flavorful juices over the top.

Notes

  • Using heavy-duty foil helps prevent tears and keeps packets sealed during baking.
  • If you don’t have steak seasoning, a mixture of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper works well as a substitute.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for added variety.
  • Adjust cooking time if slicing beef thicker or using larger potatoes.
  • Be cautious when opening foil packets as hot steam can escape rapidly.
