Ingredients

Scale

Marshmallow Mixture

  • 85 g unsalted butter
  • 6 cups regular marshmallows
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Red food colouring (drops as needed)

Base

  • 4 cups Rice Bubbles (Krispies)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bain-Marie: Fill a small pot with ½ cup of water and bring it to a boil. Place a large heatproof bowl over the pot, ensuring the bowl does not touch the water.
  2. Melt Butter and Marshmallows: Add the butter and marshmallows into the heatproof bowl on top of the boiling water. Continually whisk the mixture for 2-4 minutes until it forms a smooth, thick paste.
  3. Add Salt and Food Colouring: Using oven mitts or a tea towel, carefully remove the bowl from the pot. Stir in the salt and add one or more drops of red food colouring. Whisk thoroughly to combine the color evenly into the marshmallow paste.
  4. Mix with Rice Bubbles: In a large mixing bowl, place the Rice Bubbles. Pour the warm marshmallow mixture over the Rice Bubbles and mix carefully but thoroughly to coat them evenly.
  5. Shape the Brains: Grease your hands lightly with oil to prevent sticking. Shape the coated Rice Bubbles into oval brain-like mounds. Use a butter knife to make a dent down the middle to mimic the brain’s grooves.
  6. Decorate Veins: Dip a toothpick into the red food colouring and draw vein-like lines over the brain shapes for added spooky effect.
  7. Store: Place the shaped brains in an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to one week.

Notes

  • Use oven mitts or a thick towel to handle the hot bowl safely.
  • Oil your hands well before shaping to avoid the mixture sticking.
  • Adjust the amount of red food colouring to achieve desired vein intensity.
  • Store in an airtight container so they stay fresh and chewy.
  • For a more intense red color, you can mix food colouring into melted butter before adding marshmallows.
