Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110-115° F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (or active dry yeast)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups (480g540g) all-purpose flour

Topping Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons (42g) unsalted butter
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a stand mixer bowl or large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Whisk and let sit 5-10 minutes until foamy. If no foam, restart with fresh yeast.
  2. Add Ingredients: Add olive oil, salt, and 4 cups flour. Mix on low with paddle attachment until combined.
  3. Knead the Dough: Switch to dough hook and knead on low for 8 minutes until dough pulls from bowl sides and is slightly sticky. Add additional flour a tablespoon at a time if too sticky, avoiding too much to keep softness.
  4. First Rise: Transfer dough to lightly oiled bowl, turn to coat, cover with towel or plastic wrap, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Prepare for Shaping: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead gently to release air bubbles.
  6. Divide Dough: Cut dough into 16 equal pieces by first dividing into 4, then each into 4.
  7. Shape Breadsticks: Roll each piece into 8-inch ropes on lightly floured surface, spacing them at least ½ inch apart on baking sheets.
  8. Second Rise: Cover breadsticks lightly with kitchen towels or plastic wrap and let rise 15 minutes.
  9. Preheat Oven: During second rise, preheat oven to 400° F (200° C).
  10. Bake: Bake breadsticks for 15-20 minutes until tops are lightly golden. Rotate pans halfway for even baking.
  11. Prepare Topping: Melt butter, whisk in Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and sea salt.
  12. Brush Breadsticks: Brush warm breadsticks immediately after baking with garlic butter mixture.
  13. Serve: Serve warm, optionally with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use warm water between 110-115°F to activate yeast properly.
  • If the dough is too sticky during kneading, add flour gradually but avoid too much to keep breadsticks soft.
  • You can use either instant yeast or active dry yeast; activate active dry yeast by blooming it in warm water first.
  • Ensure breadsticks have enough space on baking sheets to expand while baking.
  • Brush breadsticks immediately after baking for best flavor absorption.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat to refresh.
