For the Marinade:
- 1/3 cup real maple syrup
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 garlic cloves, pressed or finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the Salmon:
- 2 to 2 1/2 lbs salmon fillets (cut into 6 portions, about 1-inch thick)
- 1/4 cup green onion, finely chopped (for garnish)
- Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup maple syrup, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 2 pressed garlic cloves, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. For convenience, you can also combine these ingredients in a large zip-lock bag to save on dishes.
- Marinate the Salmon: Place the salmon fillets in the zip-lock bag with the marinade. Seal the bag, removing excess air, and toss to coat the salmon. Refrigerate for at least 45 minutes, flipping the bag halfway through to ensure even marination.
- Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Oil the grates by dipping a paper towel in oil and using tongs to rub it over the grates (for safety, wear an oven mitt).
- Grill the Salmon: Remove the salmon fillets from the marinade and place them skin-side-down on the grill. Grill the salmon for 4-5 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of the fillets, until the salmon is fully cooked and flakes easily.
- Make the Maple Glaze: While the salmon grills, transfer the remaining marinade to a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Whisk constantly for 3-4 minutes, or until the glaze begins to thicken.
- Glaze and Serve: Brush the grilled salmon with the reduced maple-soy glaze. Garnish with freshly chopped green onions before serving.
