Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef

Butter Sauce & Topping

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix

Au Jus

  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced onion, stirring occasionally, and cook for about 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and nicely browned but not burnt. Add 2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme, 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, stir well, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Take the 12 sweet rolls out of the package, keeping them intact. Using a large knife, slice the rolls horizontally to separate the tops from the bottoms.
  3. Assemble the Sliders: Place the bottom halves of the rolls, cut side up, into an 11×7-inch baking dish. Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the bottoms. Then add the 14 ounces of sliced deli roast beef evenly over the cheese, followed by the caramelized onions spread out on top. Cover with the remaining cheese slices, then place the tops of the rolls on to form slider sandwiches.
  4. Prepare Butter Sauce and Apply: In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter with 1 and 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix. Use a brush to evenly coat the tops of the rolls with this mixture. Alternatively, you can pour the sauce over the rolls. This buttery topping adds great flavor and helps create a golden crust.
  5. Bake the Sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil, ensuring the foil does not touch the tops of the rolls. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes to brown and crisp the tops of the rolls.
  6. Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy mix according to package instructions using 3 cups of water. This savory dipping sauce complements the rich beef sandwiches perfectly.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Remove the sliders from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired. Serve the sliders hot with the au jus on the side for dipping. Enjoy this flavorful twist on a classic French dip!

Notes

  • Make sure to caramelize the onions slowly to bring out their natural sweetness without burning.
  • Leaving the foil off during the last 5 minutes of baking helps to crisp the tops of the rolls.
  • Using sweet rolls provides a nice contrast to the savory beef and melted cheese.
  • You can substitute provolone with Swiss or mozzarella cheese if preferred.
  • For a spicier twist, add a dash of horseradish sauce inside the sliders before baking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven or air fryer for best texture.
