Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey, if preferred)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Glaze (Optional)

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, green bell pepper (if using), garlic powder, smoked paprika, dried oregano, black pepper, salt, egg, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Form Meatballs: Scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll them into 1-inch diameter meatballs, or larger if you prefer bigger portions.
  4. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the formed meatballs onto the prepared baking sheet, making sure to space them apart so they cook evenly.
  5. Bake: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until they are browned on the outside and fully cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  6. Apply Glaze (Optional): If you want a sweet and tangy finish, mix 2 tablespoons ketchup with 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and brush this glaze over the meatballs about 5 minutes before baking is complete.
  7. Rest: Remove the cooked Donkey Balls from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes to allow juices to redistribute.
  8. Serve: Serve the meatballs warm with your favorite dipping sauces like ranch, BBQ sauce, or hot sauce for an extra flavor kick.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef for a leaner option.
  • Green bell pepper is optional but adds a nice crunch and freshness.
  • Ensure meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to guarantee they are safe to eat.
  • Breadcrumbs help to bind the mixture, but gluten-free breadcrumbs can be used for those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Glazing is optional but adds a flavorful sweet and tangy finish.
  • Can be baked ahead and reheated, making them great for parties and gatherings.
