Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, salted, room temperature (112 g)
  • 1 cup sugar (200 g)
  • 1 egg

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (133 g)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped apple pieces (100 g, peeled and cored)
  • 1/2 cup toasted pecan pieces (53 g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the apple brownies evenly.
  2. Toast Pecans: In a small pan over medium heat, toast the pecan pieces until they are fragrant, about 3-5 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent burning. Remove from heat and let them cool.
  3. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks about 1/2 inch in size to ensure they blend well throughout the batter.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, cream the room temperature butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy, which helps create a tender texture in the baked brownies.
  5. Add Egg: Beat in the egg until fully incorporated and the mixture looks smooth.
  6. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon to evenly distribute the leavening and spices.
  7. Mix Dry into Wet: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until just combined to avoid overdeveloping the gluten and keeping brownies soft.
  8. Add Apples and Pecans: Fold in the chopped apples and toasted pecans carefully; the batter will be sticky and slightly wet due to the moisture in the apples.
  9. Prepare Baking Dish and Bake: Butter an 8×8 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper. Pour the batter into the dish and press it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes, checking around 35 minutes for a golden brown crust and a skewer inserted to come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 15 minutes to set before slicing into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of ice cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Use tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for a nice balance of sweetness and tanginess.
  • You can substitute pecans with walnuts or omit nuts if preferred.
  • Make sure butter is at room temperature for easier creaming with sugar.
  • Do not overmix the batter after adding flour to keep brownies tender.
  • Check doneness early if using a convection oven, as baking times may vary.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate to keep fresh longer.
